President’s Blog, September 2015

A big shout out to Board member Jennifer Stover who has been posting pictures and other items on our Husky Newsletter Facebook page. There have been many positive comments about this newest idea to keep alumni updated. Be sure to keep checking out the alumni web site for information, pictures and other items about your organization.
On Friday, September 11th the Winterset School District honored all active military and veterans at the home football game. In addition, First Responders and Firemen were also honored. This was a wonderful tribute to these individuals who have given their time and dedication to helping our country and community. Homecoming is September 25th and alumni are encouraged to attend the game and reminisce about their homecoming game and dance whether it was last year or many years ago. I am sure each and every one of you has a special memory about that day.
The next issue of the Husky will be coming out this month and there just might be something in this issue about the Covered Bridge Festival from years ago. Speaking about the Bridge Festival, reminder it is the 2nd full weekend in October which is October 10th and 11th this year. My October blog will provide information as to the Hospitality Room and the All Class/School Reunion. There will be something special at the All Class/School Reunion this year so be sure to check out my October blog.
Until next month please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS, remember to renew membership and remain active. If you are currently not a member, please consider joining. You can go to our website at www.wintersetalumni.org and sign up for membership as well as finding out about the Association.
A final item of importance to alumni is please only use the web site that is for our alumni association. There is a site that some have gotten on which says it is the Winterset Alumni site. This is incorrect so please do not sign up for their products or membership. This web address is www.alumniclass.com/winterset. Please AVOID this site.

A great big thank you to members who have renewed their membership in the Alumni Association. If you have not sent in your dues, please do so as soon as possible and if you know of someone who is not a member encourage them to become part of a great organization of WHS Alumni.

This month there will be a board meeting and the hot topic will be the annual All Class (school) Reunion to be held Covered Bridge Weekend at the Jackson Building on the Fairgrounds. Board members will be discussing how to make the reunion a wonderful event for attendees. I will include more about this event in my September blog.

The reason I am late in writing a blog this month is I have been involved with military veterans working to get at Freedom Rock for Madison County. Our Freedom Rock will be similar to the one located north of Greenfield but with a local design. Currently there are 28 Freedom Rocks in Iowa and the individual (Bubba Smith) of Greenfield wants to paint one in each of the Counties in Iowa. Madison County is slated to have ours painted in 2019. The location of the Rock will be on the John Wayne birth site block and will be a great attraction for tourists to Winterset. The cost for the project was expected to be about $10,000 but as with everything else the costs have risen. The range is now between $15-20,000. This includes moving the rock, setting it up, flags, lighting, landscaping, walkways and other expenses. Donation can be dropped off or sent to the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Winterset and they are keeping a listing of donors. If you want to honor military veterans from Madison County please consider a donation. Thank you for thinking of this project.

Until next month please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS, remember to renew your membership and remain active. Renewal time! Post cards have been mailed to yearly members reminding you to send in dues for the upcoming membership drive. Please remain a member and enjoy the knowledge that you are a vital part of the Winterset Alumni Association. If you have a classmate who is not currently a member, please get them to sign up. Membership information can be found in each issue of the Husky and also on the Alumni website.

I want to recognize the current board members who work diligently to keep this organization one of the best. Without them volunteering at events, as well as providing insight with new ideas, it would be difficult to keep the organization moving forward. Current board members include: Jim Smith, Vice President, Linda Kelly, Secretary, Laurel Scholten, Treasurer, Tom Bass, Marilyn Fairholm, Linda Johnson, Judy Trask, RoxAnn Rhoads, John LaFratte, Micki Ustler, Jim Van Werden, Ron Tayor, and Jennifer Stover. Other valuable individuals who help keep us going are: Carol Bassett, Husky Editor; Julie Feier, Website Manager; and Billi Jo Akers Hartman, the Staff Liason from the Winterset Administration. Equally important are our contributing writers Debbie Holliday and Vicki Minor, as well as ALL alumni who write and submit their own stories. Thank you!
