President’s Blog, August 2015

A great big thank you to members who have renewed their membership in the Alumni Association. If you have not sent in your dues, please do so as soon as possible and if you know of someone who is not a member encourage them to become part of a great organization of WHS Alumni.

This month there will be a board meeting and the hot topic will be the annual All Class (school) Reunion to be held Covered Bridge Weekend at the Jackson Building on the Fairgrounds. Board members will be discussing how to make the reunion a wonderful event for attendees. I will include more about this event in my September blog.

The reason I am late in writing a blog this month is I have been involved with military veterans working to get at Freedom Rock for Madison County. Our Freedom Rock will be similar to the one located north of Greenfield but with a local design. Currently there are 28 Freedom Rocks in Iowa and the individual (Bubba Smith) of Greenfield wants to paint one in each of the Counties in Iowa. Madison County is slated to have ours painted in 2019. The location of the Rock will be on the John Wayne birth site block and will be a great attraction for tourists to Winterset. The cost for the project was expected to be about $10,000 but as with everything else the costs have risen. The range is now between $15-20,000. This includes moving the rock, setting it up, flags, lighting, landscaping, walkways and other expenses. Donation can be dropped off or sent to the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Winterset and they are keeping a listing of donors. If you want to honor military veterans from Madison County please consider a donation. Thank you for thinking of this project.

Until next month please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS, remember to renew your membership and remain active. If you are currently not a member, please consider joining. You can go to our website at www.wintersetalumni.org and sign up for membership as well as finding out about the Association.

A final item of importance to alumni is please only use the web site that is for our alumni association. There is a site that some have gotten on which says it is the Winterset Alumni site. This is incorrect so please do not sign up for their products or membership. This email address is www.alumniclass.com/winterset. Please avoid this site.
