President’s Blog, April 2022

The Alumni Board recently met and I want to provide Alumni and friends with an update from that meeting.   We are certainly fortunate to have members of the Board who are proactive and willing to keep our organization moving forward.

At the meeting, there was an election of officers for this year and board members renewing their commitment to the Association.  Officers for this year:  Rod Beem, President, Jim Smith, Vice President, Linda Kelly, Secretary and Connie Miller, Treasurer.  Additionally, your other Board members are: RoxAnn Rhoads, Linda Johnson, Judy Trask, Jim VanWerden, Marilyn Fairholm, Marilee Burk, Randy Henry, and Alyssa Tadlock.  Additional support personnel include: Carol Bassett (Husky Editor), Julie Feirer (Web Master), and Billi Jo Hartman (Administration Liaison).  When you see these Board members, please thank them for their service to the Alumni. If you would like to become a member of the Board, just contact one of us and we will welcome you as a member.

It has been a rough spring for the Winterset Community with a devastating tornado taking lives and destroying homes.  There has also been a severe storm in April which did damage to the Winterset Cemetery.  We are fortunate to have WHS alumni in Winterset who step up when the need arises.  Alumni are members of the Fire Department, First Responders, City Crews, Police and Sheriff Officers, Church groups and many more.  These groups are always ready to do whatever necessary to keep your community and citizens safe.  Please reach out to them and thank them for their service to us.

Spring has not been the best of time for many alumni, however, the WHS students are moving forward with spring events.  These include sports (track, golf, soccer), Drama, Band and Vocal events and many more.  Summer sports will start soon—Softball and Baseball.  Student participating show their pride in being a HUSKY and develop friendships that will last a lifetime.  We Alumni also need to keep our friendships from high school and stay in contact.

So, please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS, renew your membership and remain active.   If you are currently not a member, please consider joining.  You can go to our website at www.wintersetalumni.org and sign up as well as find out about the Association.

President’s Blog, January, 2022

2021 was a difficult year. The Alumni Association hopes that you will find this year positive in all aspects. While this past year has come to an end, the WHS Alumni Board wants to let you know we have been moving forward and will remain positive in making this association special for WHS alumni.

The All-Class Reunion which was held in October during the Covered Bridge Festival was well attended. Comments from alumni who were able to meet classmates included thanks for getting this reunion back after taking 2020 off due to COVID. We are looking forward to more alumni attending in October.

In this writing, I want alumni to be aware of some of the things that keep this organization alive and active. Your support helps the WHS Alumni Association remain viable, on task, and able to communicate. The association has received many generous donations. Every donation has been appreciated and welcomed by the association. These donations come from WHS classes in memory of classmates who have passed, others are memorials to family members who were WHS graduates.

Large donation of $500 or more have a special plate engraved and placed on the Alumni Association plaque located in the hallway outside Henry Miller Auditorium at the high school.

Donations have enabled three issues of the Husky newsletter per year to operate in the black — covering paper, printing, mailing costs, and personnel salaries. We were also able to publish a special issue of the Husky in November with photos from the All-Class Reunion last October. Hopefully we can do this again this year with donations made from those attending the reunion.

Another project the board contributed to was CRISP (Community Resources in Service to People), an organization here in Winterset that, among other things, has programs to aid and assist local school children. Alumni giving back to the community and school system!

So, as I end this brief article, please remember to renew your membership, and encourage other classmates to join.

Plans are being finalized for having the All Class Reunion this October during the Bridge Festival. We were not able to have one in 2020 due to COVID.  The location for the Reunion will once again be at the Jackson Building on the fair grounds from 5:00pm until 8:30pm. Food will be available at 5:30 with a free will donation accepted. Jo Agan will be the provider for food. Beverages will also be available.

In addition to having an opportunity to meet with fellow classmates and friends, Carol Basset will once again be taking pictures throughout the evening.  Special this year will be a table set up for you to look through old Boomerangs, tapes of past football games from the Mac and Mel era , and a book to purchase on the history of Madison County.

As we get back into a “new normal”, the Board has decided to take time off from the Alumni Hospitality Room that is usually located at the F&M Bank Community Room on Saturday of the Bridge Festival. Decision was made due to low attendance over the past few years at this venue. We will revisit this decision for 2022.

As we progress through 2021, your Board is also looking at a possible Alumni Project for the School District. Our last major project was the trophy case at the HS that was donated by Alumni a few years ago. More information will be provided to you when a decision is made as to the new project.

One last item for Alumni to know, the Old High School on Washington has been sold and the developer plans to turn it into apartments. Keep updated on various Winterset websites.

Please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS, renew your membership and remain active. If you are currently not a member, please consider joining.
