President’s Blog: September

The new school year has started and fall athletics are in full swing at WHS. Alumni are invited to attend Football Homecoming on Friday, September 19th when the Huskies play Glenwood. Your Alumni Board will have a registration table for alumni to sign in and information provided about the Alumni Organization. If you are not currently a member we hope you will consider obtaining a membership either as a year to year member or a lifetime member. Cost is minimal and you will become a member of one of the best Alumni organizations in Iowa.

The next issue of the Husky which was intended to be available on line will instead be mailed. There are a few concerns with the on-line issue and we are hoping that they will be worked out in time for the following issue, so there is still time to get signed up. If you accept the electronic issue of the Husky this will save numerous costs to the Alumni Organization and we can use the savings to plan additional projects.

I am asking again that classes who have reunions to provide the Alumni Association with updated addresses for your classmates. Current addresses for your reunion can be obtained at the Winterset Community Schools Business Office and provided by Billie Jo Akers.

My next blog in October will be devoted to the Bridge Festival and the All School Reunion.

Until next month please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS and remain active.

Your Alumni Board recently met and I want to provide you with information from that meeting.

1. Winterset High School Homecoming is scheduled for Friday, September 19th. We will have a table set up near the main entrance and are asking alumni to register so we can determine the number of alumni attending Homecoming. There will be board members available to answer questions you may have about your organization and also provide information on becoming a member of the Winterset Alumni Association if you are currently not a member.

2. The Covered Bridge Festival will be held the second weekend of October. Alumni are invited to attend the all school reunion Saturday evening, October 11th from 5-9pm at the Jackson Building which is on the Fair Grounds. Food and beverages will be available for a small donation. This is a great opportunity to visit and reconnect with members from your graduating class and other alumni. See you there.

3. Saturday afternoon of the Bridge Festival there you can come to the alumni welcoming center located in the Farmers and Merchants State Bank Community Building. Time is from 1-4pm. This is a ideal place to rest and relax from your festival activities. Snack and drinks will be available.

4. We are looking for individuals willing to serve on the Alumni Association Board. We meet four times a year and our mission is to maintain relations with alumni as well as develop supporting projects for the schools in Winterset. If you are interested please contact me at my email which is rowdy0079@aol.com.

5. The Husky will begin being offered electronically beginning with the issue in September. Please sign up for this service as it will help offset production costs of the Husky. Information has been provided in previous issues of the Husky and we hope you have already signed up for this service. If not, please do so.

6. We are asking classes who have reunions to provide the Association with updated address for your classmates. Street and email addresses are the only way to keep the data base of alumni up to date, so please consider this request.

Until next month please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS and remain active.

President’s Blog: July, 2014

July 4th was a special day in history for the United States as it was the day to celebrate our Declaration of Independence and the beginnings of becoming a sovereign nation due to the sacrifices the volunteers made during the Revolution. As citizens of this nation, we are blessed with liberties and rights that many other countries do not possess. I am thankful that Winterset High School alumni have become outstanding adults and giving back to the community and nation through volunteering in many organizations.

Your alumni association has many volunteers who make the organization a viable entity dedicated to keeping in contact with you and all alumni from WHS. Without them the association would not be able to function. So when you see one of them, let them know you appreciate what they do for you—Facebook items, the Husky, The All-class Reunion, Homecoming and many other activities for alumni.

Many of you volunteer in organizing your class reunions and I would like to send out a personal request to you. When you have your reunion, would you ask for donations to the Alumni Association so we can continue funding the Husky and remind them to also join the Association as membership is vital.

Until next month please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS and remain active.
