President’s Blog, September 2018

Your Alumni Association has been busy getting ready for the Hospitality Suite at the F&M Community Room as well as the All Class Reunion at the Jackson Building to be held during Bridge Festival weekend, October 13thand 14th.  The Hospitality Suite is open from 2:00pm until 5:00pm and the All Class Reunion will be from 5:00pm-9:00pm with food available starting at 5:30pm.  We will also be taking class pictures during the evening by Carol Basset, the Husky Editor. One new tradition that was started last year is taking a photo of Military Veterans from WHS who are in attendance at the reunion.  Hoping many alumni attend the All Class Reunion and renew friendships. SEE YOU THERE.

At our last board meeting, officers were elected for the coming year.  They include: Rod Beem, President; Jim Smith, Vice President; Linda Kelly, Secretary; Connie Miller, Treasurer.  Other Board members are: Tom Bass, Marilee Burk, Marilyn Fairholm, Randy Henry, Paige Henry, Sheri Holliday, Linda Johnson, John LaFratte, Jennifer Stover, Judy Trask, Micki Utsler  and Jim VanWerden. If you know or see these board members, remember to thank them for their service to WHS alumni.

Interesting side note is that Linda Johnson, RoxAnn Rhodes, Jim Smith, Judy Trask and Jim VanWerden have served on the board since the Alumni Association was founded in 1988.

Until my next blog keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS, renew your membership and remain active. If you are currently not a member, please consider joining. You can join here on our website and find out more about the Association.

A continuing item of importance to alumni is to please only use the web site that is for our association.  There is a site that some have gotten on which says it is the Winterset Alumni site. This is incorrect so please do not sign up for their products or membership. Please avoid this site. Their email address is www.alumniclass.com/winterset.

President’s Blog, January 2018

Welcome to my first President Blog for 2018, great to be able to keep in contact with fellow alumni. It has been quite cold in Winterset, but hopefully the temps are beginning to change and warmer weather is close at hand. In the olden days, we were not too concerned with wind chills or cold weather—just went about our day and enjoyed being with classmates at school and being involved in after school activities. Winter events included wrestling meets, basketball games, vocal and instrumental programs, school plays and many more. There was also enjoying movies at the Iowa Theater (which we can do again since it has reopened), working, and leisure activities outdoors.

As I reminisce I am reminded that the Winterset Alumni Association began back in 1987 or 1988 and many of you joined then and hopefully more alumni will decide to become a member of this great organization that is dedicated to keeping in contact with all alumni from WHS. We currently have 979 members and sure would like more alumni join. Membership gets you the Husky which is published 3 times per year, a data base of class members for class reunions and knowing that you are keeping the Alumni Association going.   Your Association has in the past made a new trophy case for the high school, established a memorial plaque for remembering alumni and we are currently helping WHS develop an Alumni Hall of Fame. All these were started with ideas coming from alumni remaining a vital part of the school district and community. So, JOIN and be part of this awesome organization.

The newest edition of the HUSKY will include many pictures of the All Class Reunion held during the Bridge Festival. Enjoy and be sure to thank your editor, Carol Bassett, for her outstanding dedication to the Association.

President’s Blog, November 2017

The All Class Reunion was held at the Jackson Building during the Bridge Festival Weekend in October. The weather was not agreeable and attendance was down from previous years as was the attendance at the Hospitality Room at the F&M Community room. We had only 42 sign up at the Hospitality Room and 250 at the All Class Reunion. If you were unable to attend, you missed a great opportunity to reconnect with classmates and others for an evening of fellowship and friendship.   Hopefully next year (2018) more will attend both functions.

Now for a recap of the All Class Reunion—the oldest classes with someone in attendance was the Class of 1944-Roger Hircock, Class of 1945-Jim Garnett, Class of 1946—Don Hamm. The classes from the 1960’s had the most classmates attending with the Class of 1964 winning the honor of having the most classmates in attendance for the event. A high five to my classmates (1964) for always being ready to take on a challenge and be winners.   So, to other classes, try to better us next year.

One activity at the All Class Reunion which is developing into a yearly event is taking a group photo of classmates from various classes in attendance. Carol Bassett, the editor of the Husky, is instrumental in this event. So please, next year, get you classmates and have a photo taken. We also started at new tradition of taking a group photo of military veterans in attendance. Was a great honor to see these alumni standing there and being recognized by others with a round of applause and a welcome home. Carol will be posting pictures on face book, so please check out our site.
