President’s Blog, January 2021

Welcome to 2021. 2020 is behind us and hopefully this year will bring us to a “new normal”.  The Alumni Association is still very much a part of our lives. The officers have kept their positions and are working to maintain the organization in lieu of COVID concerns. There will be plans to move forward with the All-Class Reunion in October along with the Bridge Festival (if this event takes place).

When you return to Winterset, be sure to check out changes to your community. The John Wayne Museum complex has plans to expand the building, the Madison County Historical Museum has new displays for you to enjoy, the current High School has a new gym and a lot of updates to the classrooms. There is a mural depicting Winterset history on the walls of the east alley opposite the Courthouse, store fronts around the square have new businesses, the city park has a new limestone entryway along with many more changes to your “hometown”.   So, plan a visit when possible.

Many class reunions where cancelled in 2020 and perhaps those and others will happen this year.  Be sure to check with your class officers about a reunion and remember that reunions are listed in the HUSKY newsletter. One area of concern is individuals requesting phone numbers of classmates.  The Alumni Association Policy is not to provide them due to privacy concerns. We do not have updated phone numbers and/or addresses for all WHS alumni.   If you need to find a “lost” classmate there are other means to find them: other classmates, class president/secretary or other social media outlets.  Please do not expect the Alumni Association liaison personnel to have that information.  Your understanding of this matter is appreciated.

WHS Alumni Association renewal post cards will soon be mailed to over 5,000 alumni.  If you have not paid your dues for the year, please do so.  Dues collected are dedicated to keeping your Association ongoing for many more years.  Expenses for the Association include; production and mailing of the Husky three times per year, the All Class Reunion and other expenses.   Also, if you have a classmate who is not a member, please try to have them join.  The WHS Alumni Association has been in existence since bylaws were adopted in 1990 and keeping the Association going until the next century would be awesome.

Please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next class reunion, support WHS, renew your membership and remain active.   If you are currently not a member, please consider joining.  You can go to our website at www.wintersetalumni.org and sign up as well as find out about the Association.

A few words by Rod Beem, WHS Alumni Association President, WHS 1965

2020 has been a trying time for all of us with many cancellations of events, illness to loved ones, quarantine, wearing masks, schools going to online learning, high school sports being canceled, no vacations, safe distancing. The list can go on and on for many of us. One cancelation this year is the Covered Bridge Festival which is normally held in October. Since this event will not be held in 2020, your Alumni Board has decided to cancel the All Class Reunion at the Jackson Building. It was a difficult decision to make, however, wanting alumni to be safe is most important. The All Class Reunion has been ongoing for at least 30 years. Many alumni have attended over the years and Jo Agan has been a mainstay in providing the meal. We look forward to 2021 and a new beginning of reunions for alumni.

A want to do a “shout out” to all Winterset Alumni who are on the front lines during this pandemic: military, first responders, medical personnel, law enforcement, educators, coaches and all others striving to help all of us get back to “normal”. Without your efforts, the situation with Covid-19 would be much worse. Thank you.

WHS Alumni Association renewal postcards have been mailed to over 5,000 alumni. If you have not paid your dues for the year, please do so. Dues collected are dedicated to keeping your association ongoing for many more years. Expenses for the Association include: producing and mailing of the Husky three times per year, the All Class Reunion and other expenses. Also, if you have a classmate not a member, please make an effort to have them join. The WHS Alumni Association has been in existence since bylaws were adopted in 1990 and keeping the Association going until the next century would be awesome.

At our last board meeting, officers were elected for the coming year. They include: Rod Beem, President; Jim Smith, Vice President; Linda Kelly, Secretary; and Connie Miller, Treasurer. Other board members are: RoxAnn Rhoads, Marilee Burk, Marilyn Fairholm, Randy Henry, Paige Henry, Linda Johnson, John LaFratte, Jennifer Stover, Judy Trask and Jim Van Werden. Additional support individuals include Carol Bassett (Husky Editor) and Julie Feirer (Website Manager). If you know or see your board members, remember to thank them for their service to the WHS Alumni.

Please remember to keep in contact with classmates, plan your next reunion, support WHS, renew your membership and remain active. If you are currently not a member, please consider joining.

President’s Blog, September 2019

Once again, it is time to update alumni members with upcoming events and other news. It is hard to believe that the annual Madison County Bridge Festival will be here soon — celebrating 50 years! — and with that the event the All-Class Reunion will be held that weekend. So, mark you calendar for the 2nd weekend of October (the 12th and 13th).

The All Class Reunion will be at the Jackson Building on Saturday, October 12th, from 5:00 – 9:00 pm where you will be able to gather, visit with WHS graduates and renew your membership. Food and beverages will be available until gone for those attending. A free-will donation is appreciated to help cover food and beverage costs.

Once again, Carol Bassett will be photographing classes in attendance. If classes wish to have their class photo e-mailed to them, please appoint a classmate to be the contact person. There will be a notebook available in which to write the appointees’ names and e-mail addresses. Those folks will then be responsible for e-mailing their class photo to their classmates.

There will be a class challenge to see which class has the most in attendance and also to determine the oldest alumni attending. Please bring to our attention who the oldest graduate in attendance is, as we would like to take their picture. You will not be disappointed with reminiscing and enjoying time spent with classmates.

In addition to the All-Class Reunion, you are invited to the Alumni Hospitality Room at the F&M Bank Community Room Saturday af- ternoon for rest and refreshments. Time is from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Be sure to thank Marilyn Fairholm, the WHS Alumni Association board member in charge, and the volunteers who are there to provide you with a place to relax.

While you are in Winterset for the Bridge Festival, be sure to stop at the John Wayne Birthplace Museum grounds to see the Madison County Freedom Rock that the American Legion and VFW Posts sponsored. It is a very special tribute to all military veterans from Madison County and has images of four POW’s on one side of the rock who are from Madison County—Carl Hircock, Larry Spencer, Eddie Benge and Don Thomas.

We look forward to seeing you at the All-Class Reunion.
